Citing medieval relics and miraculous images, Relic of the Boy I replicates how some objects hold a peculiar and tender aura. Such historical spiritual works contain a certain mysticism in their thick cloths, simple pigments and in the dust they gather. The subject is unknown but he feels familiar, fundamental and fleeting. The face is a manifestation and amalgamation of the faded, or fading, faces in the artist’s own life. Relic of the Boy I tries to recover a ‘lost’ face to be commemorated, worshipped and grieved simultaneously.
